Proper care is the most important thing you can do for your septic system! If done consistently you should avoid any major problems with you system.
Have
your septic tank pumped out by a reputable waste hauler
on a regular basis.
- Toxic and hazardous chemicals should never be poured down the drain or flushed down the toilet, e.g. paints, varnishes, pesticides.
- Don't use your toilet as a trash can. Do not flush: coffee grinds, dental floss, disposable diapers, kitty litter, feminine products, cigarette butts, condoms, fats, grease, oils, paper towels.
- Use bleach and other household products sparingly, it kills the bacteria in the septic tank that it needs to break down the solids.
- If possible, don't use garbage disposals because they add extra solids to the tank. (Unless you own a septic safe garbage disposal.)
